About Compucare
Computer Services
Started as a local flea
market booth in Plymouth back in 1992, our beginnings were humble. We sold
computer shareware disks, accessories and made minor repairs and upgrades on
Saturdays and Sundays. Soon people asked about buying new systems as well. Back
then, a 386DX-40 was the killer machine of its time, but not cheap! Our first
new system sold was over $3000! Back then, a 340 megabyte hard drive was almost
$400 and memory was pushing $45/megabyte.
Seeing the need for competent computer repair services in the
Kingston area, we moved to the Jones River Industrial Park on Rte 106 in 1993 to
a one room shop only 20' x 20' in size and worked nights and Sundays growing
steadily with foot traffic provided by the Jones River Antiques Flea Market in
the same building. We quickly outgrew our small space and moved into a 1000
square foot two room unit down the hall. Even though our out of the way location
was not well known, this was the most economical way to grow a small business
with steady and repeat customers.
Sadly (for us and the other tenants in the park), in 1996 the
building was converted into mini storage units and everyone had to find new
space elsewhere. By now, we were deeply rooted in Kingston, with most of our
customers living in town so we decided to stay here and find a new location.
Rents were expensive and since we were still only open Tuesday and Thursday
nights and Saturdays, a Main Street storefront just wasn't in the budget. We
lucked out and found space behind the Sampson Press, a locally owned multi
service printing and sign center downtown on Rte 3A. The space was small, but
with a larger storage building available nearby, Compucare had its new home in
downtown Kingston. The room was even smaller than the original room in the Jones
River Park, but that's what we had and we persevered with it and still do to
this day.
A few years back other computer shops moved into the area and most either
moved back out after finding out just how expensive it was to maintain a
storefront with computer prices (and profits) tumbling or got out of the
consumer market completely, focusing on business networks and corporate clients
for their business. Since then, our customer base has grown to over 1100 clients and business is good. Prices have continued to drop but good service
will always hold us up. We still work nights and Saturdays as well as other
hours by appointment providing Kingston and the entire area with superior
service at reasonable prices.
In 2007, we decided to move the
business to our family property on Route 27 just up the street from the old
location. Now located in front of the property, Compucare is easily
accessible right up the street from Whit's corner.
